Mostly I rip concert performances, and they never fail with the errors you cite, but concert performance DVDs may not rely on such determined encryption. Shrink's default is to compress enough to fit a DVD, but that's easy to override, just select no compression from the dropdown. pb ---- Original Message ---- From: "Gustav Brock" <gustav at cactus.dk> Reply-To: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> Date: 09/27/14 3:40 AM To: "Discussion of Hardware and Software issues" <dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com> Cc: Sub: Re: [dba-Tech] DVD ripper for Windows 8 Hi Peter et al I managed to check out DVD Shrink but I couldn't play back the converted files. It seems aimed at making DVD copies which I don't care that much about. Also, it is dormant: <quote> Since development of DVD Shrink has been stopped in 2005 it cannot circumvent current copy protections schemes which may manifest in these errors/error messages: • Movie playback starts in between or at the end and/or chapters do not playback in order • Invalid File Structure • Invalid Navigation Structure • Out of memory • Programming error - Exception occurred • Parameter Incorrect • Data Redundancy Check Error (CRC Error) • The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error To remove such protections do a complete backup of such media to your HDD with (use Google): • DVDFab HD Decrypter (free trial) • AnyDVD (free trial) and then use Shrink to encode it as usual. </quote> So you have to go to your pocket if you wish to be up to date. /gustav ________________________________________ Fra: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com <dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com> på vegne af Gustav Brock <gustav at cactus.dk> Sendt: 15. september 2014 10:52 Til: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Emne: Re: [dba-Tech] DVD ripper for Windows 8 Hi Peter Yes, it is as if the same engine is skinned in 47 varieties - all with a Start button down, right - and offered by a myriad of web sites. One version is free and useless, and the paid version costs about €/$ 40.00. However, at least one seems to be genuine and capable, Magic DVD Ripper: http://www.magicdvdripper.com/ There is no free version but it will run five times for free. I managed quite easily to rip "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", so it works. It can rip most copy-protected DVDs. Not really my business, I just wish to have on-disk copies of my movie DVDs for easy playback on units not having a DVD player like Surface Pro. I haven't tested DVD Shrink: http://www.dvdshrink.org/what_en.php which is free, but seems not to be able to decrypt an encrypted movie DVD. /gustav -----Oprindelig meddelelse----- Fra: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] På vegne af Peter Brawley Sendt: 14. september 2014 21:00 Til: Discussion of Hardware and Software issues Emne: Re: [dba-Tech] DVD ripper for Windows 8 On 2014-09-14 11:16 AM, Gustav Brock wrote: > Hi all > > > > Can anyone recommend a good DVD ripper for Windows 8 to store rip and store protected DVD movies as high-quality video files optimised for Windows? > > It doesn't have to be free. Google for dvdshrink32setup, be careful where you download it---as with much such software there are lots of sociopathic predators piggybacking their toxic junk on it.
