I noted that Avast is most likely in the browser. Assuming that the browser is FF, select the add-on manager from the menu and remove to your heart's content...

That's not possible. I think you most likely inadvertently installed it after the fact. Avast is very good at sneaking itself into your life. Install Ccleaner and don't pay attention - you get Avast, etc.

I suggest you follow Gary's advice.

Thanks for the link. I think it will not solve my problem, however. Several months ago I converted my main machine from Windows 10 to Linux Mint, including reformatting the drive, and somehow Avast survived that. I don't even know how that is possible, but Avast apparently does know. I suppose I could run Windows in a VirtualBox, but I suspect that won't let me get to the bottom layer.
