Hi Susan,

Bingo! You have hit on the problem. Yes, Roy is admin. No, Paul does not
know the password for Roy's account. He didn't know there was a Roy's
account until l found it. Paul does a lot of research on the Internet,
but his comprehension of how computers work is essentially zero. That is
probably why Roy set it up the way he did in the first place, with
Paul's account having no admin capabilities. I opened a terminal and
tried to go to root. Every command got the "permission denied" message.
Roy is not responding to any requests even for contact. I learned from
Paul that he and Roy didn't get along well. Oh boy!

I have not tried to log Paul off and log in to Roy's account, hoping the
password is something like "Admin." Paul is a lovely person, who was a
dear friend of my dad. He is now 93 years old and I suspect Roy figured
Paul wouldn't live long enough to need to do any equipment replacing.
So, Paul is set up with a computer that worked just fine as long as
nothing needs to be changed. He had a Canon printer that was fine until
it wasn't. He has taken the printer to three different repair places and
nobody could repair it. He has reached out to other computer people who
adamantly refused to even look at a Linux Fedora setup. I had a Linux
Fedora and Windows XP double boot setup on my Win XP machine (bought in
2006). I haven't played with it in over ten years.

I truly  expected HP to have the necessary setup software for a Linux
Fedora operating system. So disappointed!

Any ideas?

T
