Clients like zero cost. ;-) There are Wi-Fi routers/hubs and there are top of the line systems. I have found that performance, in many case parallels the price. I have clients with some very nice Cisco Wi-Fi hubs/switches and they are rock solid. (They have some great software and when directly connected to a monitoring computer, you can watch performance graphs, see the strength of the connection signal, watch connection strength diminish as the remote moves further away from the receiver etc...) I have found that some inexpensive laptop computers do not connect and stay connected as reliability as some of the better brands... (I tend to recommend Toshiba and higher end Dell and IBM units) On the other hand, my $8.00 Wi-Fi hubs works great... for about 8 meters. ;-) Jim -----Original Message----- From: dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com [mailto:dba-tech-bounces at databaseadvisors.com] On Behalf Of Gustav Brock Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 7:40 AM To: dba-tech at databaseadvisors.com Subject: Re: [dba-Tech] Vista looses frequently LAN connection and can'treconnect via DHCP Hi Jim Yes, we will definitely look for a replacement for the DHCP service. Maybe leave the router and fire up the DHCP server of their Windows Server. How about that? We don't use this setup much but why not if that could solve the issue at nearly zero cost. The router is not with Wi-Fi. That is handled with a Wi-Fi bridge. /gustav >>> accessd at shaw.ca 16-06-2009 16:29 >>> Hi Gustav: As the article(s) says it is an issue between older router equipment and Vista. I have a client who has a couple of laptops that use Vista and an older (3 years) wireless router. As soon as both of them try to connect wirelessly connection start dropping. I took the easy way out by just cabling both the offices and suggested that they may look at a new Wi-Fi router in the future. Now only if an individual is wandering around the warehouse doing inventory do they use wireless. We have a client where Vista client laptops frequently pops off and on the wired LAN. Sometimes the new DHCP request fails and the pc stays disconnected. Later you can reestablish connection.
