[dba-Tech] Remote access to a MacBook Pro

Hi John:

That is the problem. The solutions are terrible, complex or expensive...pick one.

I am not a proponent just for OSS type products...quality and reliability is always number one. The computer age I grew up in was complex...nothing was easy. Do you remember a time when a matching hard drive and interface card had to be chosen with care and then the BIOS on the computer and card had to be hacked with a few lines of 8088 assembler just so the drive would boot. Now I think it has gone too far the other way...simple, stupid, inflexible, unreliable and always expensive.

The real advantages of a product like X2Go is that it can be made to work on anything, can be made completely secure, uses true peer to peer connecting but it is not simple. Installation definitely requires a systems guy, previous preparation and it is not just a product for any client to install.

Aside: Know of a guy, who owns a similar client support business, in Grandforks, North Dakota called Aitispeed: http://www.altispeed.com, who has X2Go on all his clients...several hundred I understand. He would be the ultimate go-to-person at https://plus.google.com/+NoahChelliah/posts for questions and issue resolving.

OK, apparently I lost something in the translation.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm for open source, if I have to install
another OS/UI on top of Unix and OSX then I guess I'm just not interested,
life is complicated enough when trying to manage OSX from Windows without
adding even more layers.

RealVNC turned into a pain when the OSX is on a MacBook.

So I turned to TeamViewer which is very slick but way too expensive for a
little guy to buy but does offer a 5 user license for non-commercial use for
free. I'm not making any commercials so I guess that means I can use it ;-)

Actually all platforms are supported.

Installing x2go

X2go is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. A couple of points to note
before using x2go:

For Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or later, you must install XQuartz
(http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/) first.
For Windows, if you don't use full screen mode, you will need to resize
the x2go desktop after logging in. If you don't do this, you might not see
the task bar at the bottom of the remote screen.
Printing to a printer doesn't work but you can "print to file" if
needed.

For Windows and Mac, download and run the installer for your operating
system:

    Windows -
http://code.x2go.org/releases/X2GoClient_latest_mswin32-setup.exe
    Mac OS X 6 and up -
http://code.x2go.org/releases/X2GoClient_latest_macosx.dmg
    Mac OS X 9 and up -
http://code.x2go.org/releases/X2GoClient_latest_macosx_10_9.dmg

For more detailed
instrhttp://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:installation:x2goclientuctions,
including instructions for Linux, see

    x2go download and installation -
http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:installation:x2goclient
</quote>

Note: I have not tested any client other than Linux

Thanks for the info Jim. However its appears that I could only control a
Linux machine from an eclectic collection of other OSs. I need to control an
OSX from Windows. Might come in handy in the near future though.

Hi John:

I have been using X2Go at http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php.

It runs across all platforms, runs over SSH (with all the implied security),
does not require a third party company to manage (and charge) for
connections, is very fast and even allows past-through printing and sound.

I have recently installed it so I will be able to remotely manage my network
and am still working out the details but am so far very impressed.

Considerations: The applications involved run on and connect across all
platforms. You must install an SSH client and server on the respective
computers but it can be done very quickly, it is nice to have an absolutely
secure connection and depending on how the router is configured, the port
you want for the connection may have to be opened. Aside: After an command
line SSH connection can be maintained then X2Go can be installed.

If you decide to go this route I will be glad to help as I am just getting a
handle on this new tech myself. I am of course using Linux but the installs
and concepts are exactly the same whether it is Windows or Apple or various
smartphones/tablets.

Subject: [dba-Tech] Remote access to a MacBook Pro

Hi All,

I need to set up remote access (no or low cost) on a MacBook Pro that I can
monitor from my Windows PC. I've attempted RealVNC and I have failed. Any
suggestions as to what I might have missed?

TIA,

John B
